WOMEN IN BUSINESS TALK BUSINESS DOWN AT NEWLYNS FARMwibg-july-2010-web

The July Women In Business Group (www.wibg.org.uk) meeting, was held at family-run business, Newlyns Farm Shop, located just off J5 of the M3 at Hook. The 50 Group Members were treated to a talk and tour of Newlyns Farm Shop and Caviste Wine Store next door by Abby Janaway, followed by a specially prepared supper cooked on-site in their Cookery School by resident chef, Hannah Westcott.

Newlyns Farm Shop has been an important local provider of free-range produce for four generations, but farms have had to diversify over the years and find new ways to attract customers to ensure their existence in ever differing economic climates.  Newlyns Farm has successfully achieved just that and Abby Janaway, who married into the family business, explained that the businesses have been split in two - cousins of the Janaways now run the arable farming side of the business and the Janaway siblings have concentrated on live stock farming as they were keen to set up their own farm shop, where the freshest produce comes direct from their farm into the shop.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE NORTH-HAMPSHIRE WOMEN IN BUSINESS GROUP

Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke, was guest speaker at The Women in Business Group's (www.wibg.org.uk) Annual General Meeting held at the Red Lion Hotel in Basingstoke town centre, on 25 March.

Attended by some 40 local business women representing a diverse range of businesses, Ms Miller, who is standing for re-election for the first time this year, said that she went into politics around five years ago and was only the 277th woman to enter Parliament. "I still can't believe that we haven't yet got 300 women into Parliament, which is a great concern because issues that predominantly matter to women are slightly down the priority order for men."

THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE

At another packed event for the Women in Business Group (www.wibg.org.uk) held at the Barcelo Basingstoke Country Hotel, members and guests learnt about the work of the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, and how to protect themselves.

Brian Rudman, Group Manager for North East Community Safety Protection at Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service, presented to the group. He explained that they are no longer known as the fire brigade because of their in depth role. They are now responsible for assisting with road traffic accidents, terrorist attacks, natural disasters and environmental protection.

Brian reminded everyone about the importance of having a smoke alarm fitted - at least one on every level of a dwelling. He also recommended that everyone have a fire action plan in place, detailing what to do in the event of a fire. He suggested practising what to do in an emergency, which is particularly helpful for small children. If caught in a fire upstairs he advised that jumping out of the window should be the last resort, and matresses should not be thrown out, as they often caught in the window and caused more problems.

The North Hampshire Women in Business Group (www.wibg.org.uk) warmly welcomed local author, Karen-Ann Couper, as their guest speaker for October, held in the imposing surroundings of Sherfield School at Sherfield-on-Loddon.

Karen-Ann has never really thought of herself as a "business woman", but considering the qualities a successful business woman needs, such as motivation, commitment, tenacity, positive attitude and humour, it made her think as she worked hard to get her first book published that maybe she did indeed have some of these qualities.

Most of Karen-Ann's childhood was spent in Africa, an idyllic lifestyle she recalled where she was able to play in wide open spaces and discover and be entralled by the natural history surrounding where she lived.
